TED – Tim Brown urges designers to think big

For my current design research I’ve been looking into Strategic design. I think that Design Thinking is a part of this. Design Thinking is strongly linked to IDEO. I’ve been looking at the frameworks by David Kelley, but here Tim Brown from IDEO has given a TED talk discussing Design Thinking and the changing role of design. He discusses how design has had a diminishing focus in the 20th century – where designers were almost a priesthood of product designers all wearing black turtlenecks and designer glasses. Brown thinks that because the world is in a state of change, design’s focus is increasing again. Now designers can tackle larger societal problems through design thinking and participatory design. This larger view of design’s role has been referred to as design 4.0 by NextD, and seems to be a recurring theme.
