The New York Times have been creating interactive data visualisations online. Below are a few screen captures of these visualisations. To interact with them do follow the links! Their challenge now is to reintroduce a narrative structure into these visualisations.

The categories are weighted according to an estimate of what the average American spends, as shown – New York Times

Rectangles in the chart are sized according to the amount of spending for that category. Color shows the change in spending from 2010 – New York Times
